Can I operate my ATV/UTV on public roadways?

ATV’s and UTV’s are legal to drive on public roadways in the State of South Dakota. However, they do have to be licensed. If they are not licensed from your state, you can purchase temporary licenses from any treasurer’s office in South Dakota that allows them to be operated on public roads excluding the interstate highway system. The Lawrence County Treasurer’s Office in Deadwood is located at 90 Sherman Street #2. If you plan on using the Forest Service trail systems there is a separate pass for that. Not all trails require the pass but more and more do. The trails that require the pass are marked. Those passes can be obtained at the locations in the link below.

Your ATV/UTV needs to have mirrors, brake lights, headlights, and an audible signal (horn). Eye protection is required if you don’t have a windshield. One can use hand signals to indicate a directional change. They must also be insured to operate on a public road. Have the proof of insurance with you. Riders under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet. Follow the links below for more information.
