City of Deadwood Archives - Gateway to Deadwood's Past, Present, and Future

City of Deadwood Archives

The City of Deadwood Archives is part of the Department of Historic Preservation under the guidance of the Historic Preservation Officer.  As a result of the subsequent transformation of Deadwood in 1989 through limited gaming, a designated area was needed to house important documents of the city's history.  Established in 1992, the archives act as a municipal repository for collections pertaining to the history and development of Deadwood, South Dakota.

Today the City Archives serves as an archival repository, research center, educational facility, and archaeological repository. Under its mission, the City Archives will preserve and make accessible permanent municipal and county records, photographs, audio/visual collections, three-dimensional objects, archaeological collections and other cultural heritage materials that relate to the research and educational endeavors of the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission.

The purpose of the City of Deadwood Archives a Department of the Historic Preservation Office is to collect and preserve the activities of its municipal government, community, and county for perpetuity.  The Archives identifies, collects, preserves and makes available historical records encompassing Deadwood and county residents, organizations, businesses, and related groups from the 1870s to present.
