Foundation Program
The Foundation Program has been developed to assist and encourage property owners ensure their historic resource has a stable foundation and utilizes quality materials and craftsmanship in the rehabilitation of their structure. The objective of the program is to stimulate the quality restoration and protection of buildings and structures that contribute to the historic integrity of the City of Deadwood.
The strength and longevity of a historic building lies in its foundation. The main purpose of the foundation is to hold the structure above it and keep it upright. On the contrary, a poorly constructed foundation can be dangerous to the occupants and the neighborhood. A foundation plays three major roles in the construction of a structure.
- The basic part is to support the load of the entire building
- A good and strong foundation keeps the building standing while the forces of nature wreak havoc.
- The foundation must be built such that, it keeps the ground moisture from seeping in and weakening the structure.
To be eligible for the Foundation Program, a project must meet the following criteria:
- The project must affect a property listed on the City of Deadwood’s 1993 Historic Sites Inventory as an historic property in the Deadwood National Historic Landmark District. Properties not listed on the inventory must be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as defined in the National Park Service’s National Register Criteria.
- The building must be a residential property of not more than four dwelling units as defined by Deadwood Planning and Zoning Department.
The City of Deadwood’s Historic Preservation Officer determines a project’s eligibility. All eligible applications are subject to the review and approval by the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission.
