Chief of Police
Chief of Police, Cory Shafer, was sworn in as Chief of Police in April 2023. Throughout his tenure with the Deadwood Police Department, he has demonstrated he is collaborative, competent, and is a determined servant for the community. A transformational leader in the department, Chief Shafer has risen through the ranks within the Deadwood Police department. Starting as a Patrol officer in 2016, he provided a focus on combating the use of drugs in the community, ultimately establishing a position within the department that would directly engage drug use in the community, making it a safer place to live and visit. In 2019, he was promoted to Patrol Sergeant, where he would continue pursuing growth for the department, such as initiating a grant and innovatively obtaining resources to better serve the community. Chief Shafer was promoted to Lieutenant in 2021. There, he managed efforts in creating the Community Events Response Team.
With years of service working in security in the hotel and casino industry in Las Vegas, NV, Chief Shafer has a passion for service, working with others, and community safety. Having a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration, associate degree in law enforcement technology, and previous experience in public safety and emergency services, Chief Shafer will supervise 23 members of the Deadwood Police Department and 3 civilian employees.

Chief Shafer enjoys spending his time off with his family, being outdoors, and is a sports enthusiast. He coaches football, baseball, and basketball.
