Historic Deadwood Carnegie Library
The Round Table Club and the Deadwood Women’s Club organized Deadwood’s first public library. On April 17, 1903, the City Commission accepted Carnegie’s proposal of $15,000.00 for the construction of a new library. We love our beautiful Carnegie building which opened in 1905.
The 1914 building was built by Phoebe Hearst and the Homestake Gold Mine, and survived a devastating theater fire in 1984. Toady, the Opera House hosts 40 presentations, tours, and ARTS/CULTURE events throughout the year, while restoration continues throughout the building.
Established in 1990, the Lead-Deadwood Arts Center evolved from a small group of enthusiastic organizers into a member driven, nonprofit 501(c)3 agency supporting artistic efforts, throughout the communities of Lead and Deadwood.
The Hearst Free Library was presented to the City of Lead and its residents on behalf of Phoebe Apperson Hearst, wife of mining magnate George Hearst, on December 25, 1894. The original collection had hundreds of foreign language books to accommodate the vast and varied ethnic groups that populated Lead during the Homestake Mining Company’s heyday. Today, the library is a warm and welcoming presence on Lead’s Main Street that serves more than 30,000 patrons annually.
Sanford Underground Research Facility & Visitor Center
As a northern gateway to the Black Hills, the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center welcomes visitors from all over the world to Lead, South Dakota (pronounced leed, named for the leads or lodes of the deposits of valuable ores). The goal is to use the excitement and promise of deep underground science and engineering to inspire and engage students, educators, and the wider community through a variety of programming.

Key Club International is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities.
The Lead Rifle & Pistol Club provides and maintains shooting facilities to promote and encourage the responsible use of firearms and sportsmanship through a variety of shooting sports. We have an emphasis on gun safety and the continuation of the quality of life, liberty, and freedom.
